Evelina

On Sunday April 19, 2021 at 4pm AKT Evelina Savonin, a Performance & Music Education Major, will give her senior piano recital! She will be performing works by Bach, Schumann, Ravel, and Schubert. The UAF Department of Music Facebook page will be live streaming the recital. In-person attendance will not be permitted, with the exception of UAF Music Students. This recital is in partial fulfillment of Evelina's degree and has been prepared under the direction of Dr. Eduard Zilberkant.

Evelina started playing piano in third grade. It was the instrument that was available to her and she ran with it. With her Music Performance & Music Education degree she looks to one day open up her own studio. This recital has been tough to prepare for as many classes have been moved to online this semester due to the pandemic, but Eveline is excited to show all the progress she has made since she first came to UAF.  She is looking forward to performing all her pieces as she really appreciates every single piece of music.

While the Piano program at UAF focuses on solo performance, it also emphasizes chamber music, collaborative piano, and teaching. The well-rounded curriculum prepares our graduates to make their way in today’s highly competitive music world.

Piano students have regular opportunities to play in weekly studio master classes and perform on weekly “Music at One” student recitals as they prepare for their degree recitals and juries.  Along with individual lessons, as well as chamber music coaching, by their major studio teacher, students also receive coaching from other teachers in the music department.

Moreover, many internationally acclaimed pianists visit the UAF Department of Music as part of the Fairbanks Symphony Concert Season, and Fairbanks Concert Association.  These artists give recitals, lectures, and master classes, which are all available to our students. Recent guests have included Vladimir Feltsman, James Tocco, Natasha Paremski, Alexander Kobrin, Jerome Rose, and many others.

Every piano student studies solo and chamber music literature, collaborates with instrumentalists and/or singers, and performs in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, and UAF Wind Ensemble.  There are numerous performing opportunities on campus and beyond. Many piano students compete in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra’s annual concerto competition, which offers the winners the opportunity to perform with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra on a subscription concert.

Our former students are presented in concerts and with orchestras in New York, Germany, China and Greece.  Past students include Jamina Gerl ’11 MM who performs as a concert pianist in US and Europe, and Mallory Bernstein ’11 MM who is a teacher and an opera accompanist in Colorado.

The UAF Department of Music maintains grand pianos in all concert halls, studios, and practice rooms. Students benefit from extensive libraries containing music collections, CD’s and DVD recordings. UAF has the Charles Davis Concert Hall which is the only true concert hall in the state of Alaska, and has incredible acoustics for performances and recordings.  Every four years, UAF is the host of the prestigious appInternational Piano–e–Competition which brings world class pianists to the campus who compete to win more than $70,000 in prize moneys.

The UAF Music Department

The UAF Department of Music strives to prepare its students for 21st century musical careers by providing a rigorous coursework curriculum and opportunities for a variety of musical experiences and numerous community partnerships. The UAF Music Department is a cultural hub of Fairbanks and by extension the rest of Alaska. It provides graduating students with performance and educational skills in preparation for the workforce in appand beyond, as well as a broad skill-set of knowledge to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. Graduates of our program go on to diverse careers in music, or continue their studies in graduate programs in the United States and internationally.

The Department of Music has three distinct degree programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Performance and Bachelor of Music in Education, each with its own specialized focus. Starting your first year, you’ll gain valuable performance experience through a variety of large and small ensembles, workshops with guest artists, apprentice programs, master classes and state and national competitions. You can also specialize your degree to explore and shape your particular musical interests and career paths.

Each degree path stresses the importance of instilling a lifelong commitment to learning, creating music research opportunities that generate new artistic knowledge and insights as well as new perspectives on traditional knowledge. Part of this approach involves an understanding of non-Western frameworks of knowledge as cultivated in Alaskan indigenous musical culture and neighboring regions. Students are trained to engage the public as musical ambassadors in Fairbanks and other communities around appand beyond.
