Week 11 - ASUAF Election Week!

Five weeks to go! That’s right! Only 5 weeks to go! That means a couple of important things.

First, keep the pace! You are doing amazing and wow, what an incredible weekend we just had here in the Interior of Alaska! I went for a long walk around our Troth Yeddha’ campus yesterday and it was gorgeous. It was so warm and bright. The winter’s accumulation of snow was melting like crazy everywhere, people were out and enjoying the long-lost sun. This was the definitive end of winter and the beginning of spring. My car thermometer said it was 40 degrees! Next weekend doesn’t look to be quite as warm in the forecast (probably a good thing as this is unseasonably warm) – but guaranteed, warmer, brighter, beautiful days are ahead of us. Are you ready?

Anyway, now is the time to keep up the pace with your studies. It will only get harder to focus as the distractions will multiply with each brighter, warmer day. It is coming. There are a handful of weeks left in the term and only five weeks from this coming Saturday to commencement. Hang in there. Finish strong. You got this!

Second, it is time to register for summer and fall classes! Priority Registration will open Monday, April 7 for degree-seeking students. By registering as soon as possible, you secure your seat in the courses you need and ensure you can create your preferred schedule. Knowing you have scheduled your classes also sets you completely free for the summer.

Also, because it is time to register, it is time to see your advisor. Your advisor will help you find the courses you need to complete your degree requirements and offer advice on the best classes to take to align with your career hopes and dreams. Advisors also help navigate registration issues, such as account holds, prerequisite requirements, and course availability issues. They may even be able to recommend alternative courses or suggest opportunities for summer internships or research programs.

Your advisor is here to help you attain your goals. They are like a guide. Working with your advisor will help you make informed decisions about your academic journey.

Lastly, I want to make sure that you know about this afternoon's ASUAF Candidate Forum. From, the ASUAF Elections website, “Elections play a vital role for the student body by ensuring representation, empowering student voices, promoting active involvement, fostering responsibility, nurturing leadership abilities, cultivating a sense of community, impacting decision-making, honing diverse skills, facilitating connections, and providing a structured avenue for driving positive changes.â€

These elections are important. Your representatives will be selected based on your vote! Grab a friend, stop by, or tune into the forum this afternoon!

So, that is all. Keep the pace, don’t get distracted with all the wonderful things that spring is bringing – and take a moment to book that appointment with your advisor. Then, get registered for classes!

Have a great 11th week of classes! You are doing great – the end is in sight! Keep up the good work. Let me know when you see things we can do better. As always, I’m at obguthrie@alaska.edu.
