Tomatoes get a head start after being planted indoors at a ºÚÁÏÉçapp greenhouse in spring 2024 before the weather warmed enough to plant outdoors.

Get your hands dirty and learn about starting seedlings indoors before the outdoor growing season begins. At a workshop, Mallory Smith of the ºÚÁÏÉçapp Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station will share her top tips and tricks for cultivating healthy seedlings.

Starting seeds at home saves money and is a way to grow unique plant varieties that may not be found in local greenhouses. Participants will take home a variety of seedlings to nurture and grow.

The workshop is Thursday, April 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 1W05 of the Arctic Health Research Building on the Troth Yeddha’ Campus in Fairbanks.

 Topics include:

  • Choosing seeds and varieties
  • A sowing schedule that maximizes plant potential
  • Selecting the ideal soil medium
  • A hands-on demo of soil block techniques
  • Tips on transplanting, watering and caring for your seedlings

Smith, garden manager for the UAF experiment station’s ºÚÁÏÉçappHarvest Collaborative, has more than 15 seasons of experience growing fruits and vegetables in northern climates and working in the local food movement.
