Friday Focus: Returning light a reassuring presence

    February 14, 2025

This time of year I find myself obsessing about our returning daylight. I count the accumulating hours and minutes and the time gained each day (six minutes and forty-nine seconds today!). Even though I have absolutely no control over the returning light and warmth, the phenomenon is a reassuring presence. It brings me joy; it just gets better and better from here and I am already excited that we will cross over the ten-hour-day mark in two weeks! At the other end of the not-in-my-control spectrum is the current turmoil in Washington, D.C., and the uncertainties related to federal funding in general and for UAF in particular. Because of that stress, I am especially thankful for the returning daylight as a source of strength.

Friday Focus: Responsibility, accountability and ownership

    February 07, 2025

UAF began proactive strategic enrollment planning in the fall semester of 2018. Since then, our administrators, faculty, staff, and students have worked together to implement dozens of action plans that have improved our operations, enhanced our reputation, and increased our enrollment (and revenue) despite a nationwide decline in enrollment trends. And we know there is more we need to do. New data from the Census Bureau indicate not just one, but two demographic cliffs, which will result in fewer high school graduates across the United States. In Alaska, when population figures are adjusted for the likelihood of attending college after high school, this results in a sharp enrollment decline that we are already witnessing. The University of ºÚÁÏÉçappBoard of Regents has emphasized the urgency of addressing this challenge by increasing our share of new students in the competitive enrollment market and focusing on retaining and graduating the students we enroll.
